GETTING READY FOR THE BIG DAY
Because replacing a roof is a major undertaking, it’s critical to prepare your home so that the procedure goes as smoothly as possible. Depending on the sort of roof you’re installing and the state of your current roof, the job can take anywhere from one to several days to complete. Here’s how to prepare your home and family for the installation, as well as what to expect during and thereafter.
MATERIALS FOR ROOFING
Materials must be delivered to your home before your roofing contractor may begin working. You should expect shingles (or whichever roofing material you’ve chosen) to be left in your driveway or on your roof a few days before the installation. Before the big day or very early in the morning, a dumpster could be delivered to your house. A second dumpster may be kept on your property if your roofing contractor recycles old shingles. So that you’re ready and available, ask your roofer when everything will be delivered.
PETS & FAMILY
Make sure you and your family are prepared in advance for the event. Because replacing a roof can be fairly noisy, consider leaving the premises or making arrangements for your children and pets to be cared for by a babysitter while your roof is being installed. If you leave the house, make sure you’re always reachable by phone in case the roofing contractor wants to talk to you.
If you opt to keep the family at home, make sure everyone understands the importance of wearing shoes outside and being cautious while entering and exiting your home; it’s better to reduce traffic to a minimum or eliminate it entirely to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.
YOUR RESIDENCE
Aside from the loudness, roof installation might create some vibration, so it’s a good idea to remove fragile items (like photographs) from walls or shelving, particularly on external walls. Consider covering anything in your attic that could be harmed by falling debris during the roof replacement.
YOUR LANDSCAPE
To keep debris from falling on your plants, cover them or move them out of the way. This is something your roofing contractor may or may not be able to help you with. Keep your cars out of the way so they don’t get damaged and so you can utilize them whenever you need them. Before the roofers arrive, make sure all toys and equipment are put away so they have a safe working environment.
AFTER THE INSTALLATION OF YOUR NEW ROOF
Inquire about the cleanup process with your roofing contractor so you know what to expect. The roofer should clean up any debris that has been left around your property, including in your gutters and downspouts, as well as on the lawn, once your roof has been installed. With your roofer, do a final examination of the roof and yard to ensure that everything in your contract has been completed and looks fine. Keep in mind that you’ll most likely find some nails in your yard in the next days and weeks, so make sure everyone in your family wears shoes outside until you’re certain it’s safe.
The dumpster(s) will be picked up once the roof replacement is finished and you are satisfied. Remember that this could occur a few days after the roof is installed. Also, make sure your contractor registers your warranty for you or that you register it yourself.
